Hubs, Auto vs Locked??

All my trucks in the past have either had auto hubs or manual hubs, never a combo of both. Today I was out cleaning the truck I have owned for about a month or so now and I see not notches on the wheel center caps, so I pop them to see if they are full of mud.. Wow I have hubs in there, with a selector for Auto and Lock. So I am not 100% sure if I am reading this right but there is a arrow turning clockwise and it says LOCK and an arrow turning counter clockwise and it says AUTO. Both of my front hubs where turned fully clockwise. So this would mean my hubs are LOCKED, correct? I could be totally wrong but I should have these in the "AUTO" position that is fully counter clockwise right??

That is all correct. Clockwise manually locks the hubs. Counter-clockwise is the "Auto" mode. The auto mode isn't always the most reliable, which is why you have the manual lock position.

Having just learned this myself, I'll pass it on.

Auto SHOULD engage the hubs when you flip the 4wd switch on the dash (called ESOF by the way). They may not engage in auto though for various reasons.

Lock...well locks them to the axle. The front axle spins freely though (meaning 4x4 is not engaged) unless you also flip the dash switch to 4wd.

Generally the hubs should be in auto unless you know the auto lock doesn't work and you want to be in 4 wheel drive.

Some say you can run the hubs in lock safely although you increase wear on some front axle parts. I wouldn't unless you use 4wd a lot.

Arrow

They have you covered with the Auto .vs Lock position.

IMHO...the only time I put my hubs in Lock...is if I am running the mountain forest roads or desert sand runs. I may be having to switch the 4x4 **** several times...and even while not moving. Not having to worry if the Auto will engage.

Auto works best when you have wheel spin. So...if you are stuck in a snow bank or mud hole...Auto may not engage. Just so you know...

Thanks for the info guys! I will put these back into auto, unless I plan on needing the 4wd.. As it wont get used very often.

Clock to lock

Clockwise locks the hubs. Counter-Clockwise unlocks or puts them into auto depending on the hub.
