Sloppy 5spd shifter

93 with 212K miles. I replaced the rubber shifter kit and my shifter still hits the dash. No problem getting in gear and will shift through all gears just has a lot of play. Any thoughts?

The shift rails, linkage, fork, etc.. might have a large amount of wear. IF the pivot pins/ball in the shifter is worn, that will also cause a lot of slop.

1993 what? Transmission and vehicle would help here.

On my '89 F-150 I used a shifter repair kit like one of these for my M5OD.

Is this the "rubber shifter kit" that you already replaced?

Then I would think it has to be internal wear/damage in the shift mechanism.

Worn shifter forks, or do I need to budget for a rebuild / another trans?

The M5OD's shifter forks and shift mechanism can be refurbished without replacing the transmission.

Update: turns out the set bolt on the shifter was not pushed through far enough. The shifter nub has a channel where the bolt locks into. When I did the repair kit I positioned the bolt as it was when removed. Yesterday I took a second look. Used a punch to drive the bolt home and that tightened it. Shifts are nice and crisp, no more hitting the dash.
