Hey guys, I just wanted to get an idea about what some of you are getting for MPG on the road. I just bought this 03' F350 4x4 sc 5.4L auto about a month ago, putting a few bucks into it to get it road ready. It has 130k on it now, seem to run decent after pulling the 20" wheels off of it and going back to 16". I replaced the trans cooler lines, fresh trans fluid, didn't change filter. Fresh oil. Now I leave tonight from Chicago area to Northern Mississippi, should take about 10 hours running 57 south to 55.
My 2000 f250, 4X4, manual tranny gets 15.5 mpg's with mostly highway driving at 60 mph. My 2002 expedition with 3.73 and automatic gets 14 mpg's in the same situations.
My 04 automatic extended cab short bed with a 6" lift and 35's gets 7 city and 9 highway. Before the lift and tires it was 8 city and 10 or 11 highway.
Just got back in town tonight....going to top off tank tomorrow and do the numbers. 1218 miles. Left Friday night @ 6pm returned home with a full load about 10pm Sunday.
2004 F-250, SCSB, Auto, 3.73 rear diff, no lift and 265 tires, I get 12 to 14 hwy and about 8 or so in town, if drive like an adult. That's according to my Scan Gauge II.
I figure Gallons per Hour when plowing, let's just say a lot.
03 F-250 reg. cab long box, A/T, 4x4, 140,XXX miles gets high 12's mpg empty if I keep my foot out of it. Hauling 7,000 lbs (ramcharger toy and trailer) last go around got 7 mpg's.
My 2008 4x2 Supercab 8' bed with 3.73's gets 17.5 on the hwy doing 65-67 mph "unloaded". I am in Texas though with LONG and FLAT roads at sea level. Towing knocks it down to 12-14 mpg depending on load weight and wind obstruction.
If I am visiting family up in Arkansas where the terrain is much more varied, my "unloaded" mpg plummets to the low teens while my "loaded" mpg might crack single digits.
I just tallied up the trip It's 1218 mile round trip from my house in the NW Subs of Chicago to my moms house in Southaven, MS I used 82.23 Gallons of gas, $188.50. I averaged 14.812 mpg there and back. I went down empty and came back with a load of kitchen appliances. Not much of a load really weight wise, I'd say about 1000lbs total. I didn't think to get just mpg going down empty vs loaded. Even still, I think that's actually pretty good for a 1 ton 4x4. I have a 95 F250 4x4 with the 5.8L ZF5 and I only get about 10mpg around town, I bet my hi-way miles wouldn't get to 15mpg.
