I have begun to notice a vibration when I am in first gear starting out with a bit of a load. The vibration goes away as I gain speed and the load reduces. None at any of the higher gears.
If I take off real easy and allow the truck to gain speed without pushing it, the vibration does not exist.
The truck is the one outlined in my signature. It is equipped with a 3 speed auto with overdrive.
I am thinking this could be a U-Joint that might be starting to go out. What do you think?
U-joints *usually* don't vibrate much until 30+ mph or so. It's easy to check though. Slide on under there and give the drive shaft some solid wiggling around and see if it jiggles or clunks at all on either end.
From what I've experienced with my own truck, a bad u-joint is possible and an inexpensive fix if that is the issue. Over two years I replaced all four brake discs, ball joints, and the front unit bearings before I figured out a vibration issue I was chasing was just a u-joint. $50 and an hour of work and the vibration was finally gone.
What the Sarge said. Inspect the carrier and ujoints as suggested. They can visually inspect ok yet be bad; suggesting drive shaft removal so you can "feel" the joints for smooth movement or excessive play. If you have a slip spline it could need grease. Use only Ford XG-8 grease, whole tube.
How many miles on that 03?
I had a 50-60mph vibration that a Ford tech told me was an alignment issue. I replaced the three u joints and the double cardan bearing and viola no more vibration.
My rear-most ujoint was bad, and it cause a vibration when starting from a stop, but only until a certain low speed when the vibration quit.
Exactly the same on my truck, only it was upon braking. It was in perfect alignment most of the time, but when braking it would cause the axle to shift just enough to cause a vibration...thus causing me to replace all my brake discs.
