Had the Ex go down a few days ago. Crank but no start condition.
Checked all fuses and relays fuel pump and pcm related I could find. As it was on a busy street I could not hear the fuel pump priming. Tried to feel with a screwdriver against the tank and felt nothing. I did get it to turn over with starting fluid in the intake. So I'm chalking this up to needing a fuel pump. Only thing I didn't know how to check was cps. But with it starting with the fluid I'm thinking the pump is out.
Just checking here to see if there are any other possibilities before dropping the tank.
Did it start and run with starting fluid or just attempt to start? It will try to start with starting fluid (bad idea) even with a bad CPS. The CPS just controls the timing of the injection cycle which you are bypassing by spraying it with starting fluid.
Sorry, V10. It started with the starting fluid but would not stay running. I mention cps cause that was one of the possibilities I came across researching here. Going to pull codes next. No ses light
Rent a fuel pressure tester at a auto parts store.
The passenger side rail has a port to hook tester too. It's threaded just like a valve stem on your wheels so make sure the kit you rent has that adaptor.
You should see about 28 to 32 psi crankig I think. If it's less than that given your data on starting fluid it's probably the pump.
You might check the inertia switch too, to make sure it was not tripped.
IN my experience, bad fuel pumps can and do still make a sound upon turning the key on unless there is an electrical problem or the pump is so toasted that it cannot physically run anymore which is rare.
Either way, you mentioned checking the relay. If you haven't done so already go into the manual and find where the fuel pump relay is and swap it with a similar one in the electrical box just to make sure. If you have done this already then disregard. The only time I ever had a fuel pump problem that involved no sound coming from the gas tank upon turning the key on, it was the fuel pump relay. I even sprayed carb cleaner into the TB and it kind of started which is evidence of a fuel pump problem but in this instance, it was not the pump.
Fuel pump replaced. Problem solved. Wasn't too bad a job. In fact the most time consuming part was wrestling the 1/2 full tank back into place. I know draining fuel would have been easier but I didn't have a container to hold that much fuel. I just replaced the pump and not the entire assembly.
Of course Mr. Murphy couldn't let me do this repair w/o another issue presenting itself. The vent line on my fuel filler neck rusted and broke off in the tube to the tank. Can't believe this part was $300 for Dorman replacement at Advanced. No way was I gonna spend that when the pump itself was under $100 with discounts. Found one on ebay for under a hundred bucks and should have it by Tuesday. I replaced the filler and vent hoses on the tank already as they were deteriorating. No way was I gonna drop the tank again when they failed.
Thanks for all the replies. I don't post much but FTE has helped me keep this Beast running over the years. I've had it 10 years now. Purchased with 31,000 miles now at 170,000. Family has been reduced through attrition but I'm keeping her. Love this truck.
