Cps or fuel pump?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Went to get a paper this morning and my truck just quit on me. Its been running great with not even a hick-up. I was driving down the road and the check engine light came on and then the truck just started shaking violently with the engine sounding like it was Starvin for fuel. Then just died. It would start back up and run fine doe a sec or two. Just long enough to put in drive and then it did it again. Then it'd fire off fine but couldn't even get it in gear before it would act up. Now it won't even run for a sec. It'll fire off. But runs really rough and one for a sec or two before dieing.

I'd start with the CPS. Did the Tach go to zero when it happened? Pull the codes and see if the CEL wasn't thrown by the CPS or just replace it and see if that doesn't solve the problem - I always carry an extra CPS or two since that part is most likely to leave you stuck on the side of the road. Fuel pump won't throw a CEL. When my fuel pumps give out they start leaking fuel badly but do not affect engine performance.

Do you have any fuel in the fuel bowl? Do you know what you have for fuel pressure when cranking? It does sound like a cps issue rather than a fuel issue like fridge diesel said.

The only reason I was thinking fuel issue was cause the way it seems to be Starvin for fuel. I just tried starting it after its been sitting since this morning and it ran for about 30 secs. Before dieing. Guess I need to pull the cps off my truck and try it on this one since I know I won't be buying one today.

^^^ x2 above ^^^

Pull the lid off fuel bowl and check. That should eliminate some unnecessary parts replacement.

What's the pressure while cranking or running temporarily? You can use a cheap tire stick style pressure gauge to check.

I might could check cranking. But not running. It won't run ling enough to see that.

The Rachel does move when cranking. While its "running" it runs good. Just won't stay running.

Anyone have a write up on the cps. I'm not even sure where to find it.

CPS is located on the front of the motor, passenger side. Crawl underneath and look up, it is below the belt at center right facing forward. Grey or Black in color with an electrical connector and 10 mm bolt holding it in place.

If you can pull the codes, look for a P034* code. I usually get an P0344 code when my CPS is failing. Sounds to me like it is failing but intermittently and I would start by replacing it with one you know works and see if that solves the problem.

Another spot to check is the ICP sensor. I have never heard of one causing this much trouble but it is possible. When they go bad they do make the truck idle poorly and miss/stumble while running. Try disconnecting it and see if the truck starts and runs on default settings. You will get a CEL when running the truck with it disconnected but if it starts and runs this could be the problem. The ICP sensor is located on top of the engine, drivers side, front of engine inboard of the valve cover. You will want to pull the fuel filter/valley of death cover off (if you still have one) to get at it easily. If there is oil in the connector you will probably want to start thinking about replacing it as it is going bad.

I'm with Rick on this one. Every CPS code I've seen was a soft code meaning it will set a code but not the CEL

Oh and the light don't come on until it starts running rough. The few secs that it'll run right the light isn't on.
