Cylinder wall pitting

So, you want to build a project engine...

I bought a 351W to build as a side project for my 86 F150 main project. Broke the engine down and found substantial rust in the #4 cylinder. I was able to get most of it out to the point that I could cycle the piston up and down smoothly, but it left some decent pitting.

My concern is that the piston tops are marked .040 and the bore measure 4.040 with a micrometer so its already at .040, as is. I know its hard to tell from a pic, but will taking it to .060 get enough of this pitting out to make it usable?

How hot a motor are you going to build?

I searched "351w .060 over" and found a bunch of people running .060 over with no issues, and others saying no way, it will over heat etc.

You can have it sonic checked if you want. But check the price of that vs. another block.

Nothing hot at all. Maybe very mild cam, probably stock heads. Not looking to build a high performance machine. What I'm up against mostly, it the fact that I finally found a complete 351 in my area that was "affordable". I know,I know...I guess you get what you pay for. If I have to search for another block or another complete motor, my little project's budget will likely be blown out of the water.

I guess it is what it is at this point. I'm just wondering if taking it to the machine shop is even going to be worth the trip. I guess they could sleeve that cylinder....

The word elsewhere was to run it a .060 and not worry with a mild engine.

Some guy said he had gone .100 on a 351w.

A sleeve would be $100-150 maybe, not worth it imo when there are billions of blocks out there.

From that pic, I'd say no, it more than likely will not clean up & it isn't worth sleeving being as it is already .040 over. I'd find another one.
