C'mon in! Nice truck. I think the color is fine. The guys on this sit are great. They will help pretty much any way they can. Me included although I'm just barely a " shade tree " mechanic.
I was wondering if there's anything i can do about the play in my shift lever. It has a lot of free side to side movement (even while in gear) and I'm wondering if that's just how they were, or if I can have it tightened up and mitigate it a little.
Sourcing a new (or good used) rear cable for the park/emergency brake would be a good idea. It cannot apply even pressure to both rear drums with that kink. They're not hard to replace, but a little time consuming.
The shift collar and tube are bad about wear on these trucks. They are a little more trouble to replace, but well worth the effort. Some forgo the repair and install a floor shift. Not my thing, but to each their own. As nice as that truck looks, I'm guessing you'll opt to keep it original. As for my earlier comment on the color: My dad always thought it best to keep the original color. Even though I'm not real fond of green, I've owned (and still own one) several, one which I drove for 17 years. Stick around and you'll get some great help from these guys
Thanks for the responses. On Friday I'll be trying to get some parts and either replace that back right parking brake line by myself, or with some help if I can get it. I should have also mentioned that it does have the 4 on the floor manual transmission. I really like the look and feel of the tall shift lever, I just want to tighten up the play on it since its a bit loose.
Also, until I need to change parts or get bored, ill definitely be keeping it as original as possible. Even then, I like the fact that so much of it is in its original condition that it will be hard for me to change anything major... Maybe wheels someday, but nothing crazy. The color is growing on me since its so different from most cars and trucks on the road.
I'm already glad I joined this site, I've gotten more than a warm welcome and a lot of good advice. Thank you.
A straight stick Manual has play in the lever. That's how they are. They get more with wear obviously, but it's not gonna be a tight stick like a new car. As long as you can find the gears and shift it, I'd say it's probably how it is.
Ok thanks... I kinda figured that was the case but since while its in gear it still moves a good few inches side to side and reverse is a bit hard to find sometimes, that it might be able to be tightened but it's not a serious issue or anything.
A few inches while IN GEAR is excessive. I would bet that there's bushings that need attention. Unfortunately, they would be inside the trans. I'm not familiar with the inner workings of these manuals.
Nice pickup. I had a 79 GMC that was just too much to fix up with all of the rust and very little help. I just bought a 2004 F350 in great shape though. Good luck!
After looking online for parts lists and schematics and stuff, I am able to find a "gear shift spring," but I cant find any part numbers or info on any bushings. I have seen videos and pictures of other cars and trucks that DO have a couple cheap bushings that hold the pivot tightly in place. It really does seem like the symptoms of those bushing being worn are exactly the same as what I'm seeing with mine, so I'm wondering if mine uses bushings and I just cant find any info on them, or if its some sort of spring instead.
