Running hot

Hi everyone I swapped the 4 bbl intake and went back to the 2bbl and now my truck is getting hot and building up a lot of pressure in the cooling system. Gets hot at idle and has never done this before. The hoses get rock hard. I double checked everything and can figure it out. Any ideas???

Slow timing (retarded ignition) can do it.

That's your timing test? Those are symptoms of too much advance. Put a light on it. Also did you use a different thermostat when you did the swap or is it the same one?

Just my 2 cents, I use a 165 thermostat and my truck stays cooler when I get stuck in traffic.

If the ignition timing is too far advanced, the starter can kickback.

"Slow" or retarded ignition, on the other hand, is the opposite problem. The starter will turn over smooth, and it may even run sort of OK.

In this instance though a lot of unburned fuel will be passing through the cylinders. The exhaust manifolds can in extreme cases start glowing PDQ. Overheating is a symptom of retarded ignition timing. Not saying this is the problem here but it's definitely something to check.

Maybe to accidentally put the t-stat in backwards. Do you have little kid(s) that wanted to talk with Daddy at that moment? It will only cost you a t-stat gasket to make sure.

I checked the thermostat to see if I put in wrong. It installed correctly.

Take it out, and run it a bit. You can put it back in later.

I just realized and remembered that when I first got the truck and I went from the 2bbl to the 4bbl the truck didn't even have a thermostat. It had some kind of restrictor that made the hole smaller. Maybe there's a problem with the intake?

Are the top and bottom hoses equally hot?
As in stirring up junk from the manifold change and plugging a marginal radiator?

A number of things can cause this. Is the jetting right on the carb (did it run good with this carb previously?). Is the fan put on the right way and is the shroud on? Are the intake gaskets oriented correctly (coolant ports all open?).

What did you take off/put on in this process?
