How did the distributor gear look on the distributor you removed? I was going to ask if you had verified the rotor was pointing at #1 with #1 at TDC, if the distributor had skipped a tooth it would have the same symptoms.
Turning the engine over with the cap removed can also show a worn distributor gear, the rotor will jump around instead of turning smoothly.
I have also used one of the no name HEI distributors, first thing I did when I got it was to put extra heat sink compound on the bottom of the module since heat is what kills them. I have around 3000 miles on it so far, no issues.

The gears looked good. In fact all looked good. Just a Distributor gone bad for no good reason... I guess?
