Welcome to FTE Doc, great advise given guys, having a monitoring device is crucial , here's a few reasons to ponder 1 Alternator( 140 amp alt is better than the stock 110 , on a full load like HVAC , radio , every light on in the house you don't want anything lower than 13.3 , a healthy Alt you will see 13.7/14.2 in good range,2 battery's if you have to ,replace in pairs great range is 13.5/14.0 #3. Your injectors will thank you for #1and #2 and so will your FICM witch is #3 now this is Important to monitor all #s to have a healthy ficm , if you see anything lower than 45v don't wait until the Injectors tell you geter shipped to Ed down at Ficm Repair .com . Didn't mean to scare ya just stating some facts, grab some snacks and your Beverage of choice and happy reading, and again WELCOME

If it hasn't been mentioned, add a Coolant Filter

Cheap upgrade, easy to do, well worth it.

Welcome! I'm fairly new here myself. Mine's an 05 F250, FX4 crew cab, had 206k when I got it. History unknown. I have 213k on it now.

It died in March, EGR cooler failed and one injector was causing hydrolock, then a standpipe o ring failed. I did all the work myself with help from the folks on this forum. They helped me more than they know with advice and encouragement. I've worked on a lot of stuff in my time, but this is the first diesel.

First, go through diesel tech ron's videos on youtube. He passed in May in a tragic accident, may he RIP, but the videos are still there. I think he has 80 or so, plenty to keep you busy on off shift.

Then go read all the articles at ficmrepair.com, great info there. Unfortunately, I didn't buy my replacement injectors from them so that wound up costing me time and money. I won't make that mistake again. They absolutely know their *stuff*.

If it hasn't been done, replace your EGR cooler, or do the delete, make sure to do the oil cooler while you're in there. It isn't easy, (at least it wasn't for me) but brings peace of mind. I replaced mine with an upgraded EGR and oil cooler. They say if you delete '05 and up EGR cooler it sets a constant code. I didn't want that so just stayed legal.

If you don't know if the HPOP STC fitting has been replaced, I'd go ahead and buy a new fitting and gaskets, have it ready. They say it isn't a matter of if the STC will fail, but a matter of when. I think I paid about $100 for the STC fitting, HPOP tool and IPR socket. It's waiting on me to do it.

If it doesn't have one already, get a bigger alternator. You can get a 140 amp for about $180. They make some that are much more powerful, but they are expensive.

For oil changes, you can usually get 5w40 Rotella T6 on Amazon cheaper than any auto parts store and if you have Prime, shipping's free.

Use Archoil fuel and oil treatment. Amazon sells it, too.

Buy a BIG oil drain pan, this sucker uses 15+ quarts. I always had gassers so this was a shocker to me. Prepare for ~ $200 oil changes, don't go over 5k miles.

Get a good scanner/tuner/OBD app. I have a SCT Edge. There is also the torque pro app you can get and use a tablet. It is indispensable for monitoring and troubleshooting.

Things on my list but haven't done yet:
Full coolant system flush and install coolant filter.
Install secondary oil filter.
Reroute CCV.
Mishimoto 200deg thermostat.
(there are others, listed on ficmrepair.com)

Good luck!

Good info 53jimc, thanks for the input. Right now I'm changing all fluids, then a blue spring upgrade. After that it will be piecemeal cause the ol lady is a banker. So she never wants to spend money lol. Keep up the work bro, it'll pay off in the end. My old 7.3 is still running without a rebuild. I gave it to my little brother at 960k and he says he has 1.2 mil now and still hasn't done a rebuild. I wanted another 7.3 myself, but every one I looked at needed too much work, so this is my first 6.0. I'm hoping and praying for a good load out on this one as well.

On Youtube videos you also want to watch SrMasterTech (Rusty). He has a lot
of very good info. We lost him this last year to cancer.

He has some good tips on how to get the turbo out without using every
swear word in the book.

Here is a pair of links to Rusty and Ron
