Starter problem

My 56 with a 351 has suddenly refuses to start. The starter is not engaging (it is spinning) Just wondering if there are any tricks to get the starter to engage when something like this happens It is a two year old starter with very little use on it. Thanks for any suggestions

Most likely the starter solenoid is worn out or stuck. It sits atop the starter and engages the gear against the flywheel or flex plate. An emergency fix is to gently tap on the side of the solenoid with a real small hammer.
