A number of companies tried the "optical chopper" route for distributors back in the early 70's but the limitations were soon discovered. The Hall effect magnetic sensor works better under the greasy dirt and dust of the automotive environment.

But then if you are racing on weekends and clean the optics off every week the opticals probably work good.

I've used Accel Blueprint, MSD Billet 8580 (non-vacuum), stock and DUI. I currently have the DUI unit because of the ease of wiring and the custom curving. The Accell and MSD are quite easy to self-curve, although this takes time and patience. The MSD unit requires an MSD box to work directly or an adaptor may be purchased to connect with the Duraspark system. The Accel unit is a direct replacement.
