Just purchased a 4.6 L engine for an '02 f150. This engine has the 4 bank coils on each side, do I know it's a 99 at the newest. I'm trying to get a gasket set for the motor but the keep asking for a specific digit in the VIN. Is this really necessary?
Yes because there are two 4.6L motors.
Windsor and Romeo.
.
The 8th digit is the motor build.
2=4.2L
W=4.6L ROMEO.
6= 4.6L WINDSOR.
L= 5.4L
.
The 10th digit is the year.
V=97.
W=98.
X=99.
Y=2000.
1=2001.
2=2002.
.
If your replacement motor looks the same in all respects as the one in your truck, use the 8th digit of your truck and the 10th digit for the replacement motor.
The people behind the counter don't know these things so have to ask you, to find the correct part numbers.
In this case neither one of you knew.
Good luck.
There are visual differences between the Windsor and the Romeo.
Valve cover mounting bolt count.
Main bearing tension bolts in the side of the block near the Pan rails.
Look at you replacement motor and compare with your old motor for these differences.
If none, use the ID for the replacement motor.
You would need to in any event or if the motor is not from the same production plant, return the motor for exchange.
You should obtain a copy of the Haynes 97-2002 Manual for the various procedures.
Page 2C-14 shows the main bearing jack bolt information.
Page 2B-16 the head gaskets differences each bank etc.
Good luck.
