EGT

I just had an EGT probe installed on my Mini Maxx. Wondering about the shutdown EGT level. People say under 400 degrees or under 380 or whatever. What is the reasoning for not shutting down until EGT's come down?

Also, I've been surprised how quickly EGT comes up under acceleration. Temps up to 1400 come pretty quick although just for a moment. I'm curious to see what they do over the weekend pulling my 32' camper up a mountain pass.

Must be running a pretty hot tune or stock exhaust. It's a bit of a meh, you don't want to shutdown instantly when coming over a hill how about. But by the time you slow down, go through town, park your truck etc your EGTs will be low enough that it won't matter. People worry about cooking the turbo if it shuts off at say.. 800-900 i'm not sure..

Anyways, i wouldn't worry

I usually try to wait until EGT is under 500 before shutting down, at least with my truck in 90-100 degree weather it would take my truck quite a while to get down to 380-400. The reason it is better to let it cool down is because when the engine shuts down oil stops flowing to the turbo bearings and 1 the turbo will be hot and 2 it will still be spinning and it can cause the oil to cook and kind of gum up the bearings. EGT's do go up really quickly, make sure you are running a tune that is safe to tow with when you tow.

I have always heard that you needed to let the turbo cool down before shutting the rig down due to the dino oil from the olden days. With today's synthetics I heard it is not as much of a concern. Either way unless you are really nailing the pedal or just pull into a rest stop on the highway, after a few minutes of normal town driving the turbo should be cool enough to shut her down safely without worry.

Set it at 500, see what it does. I bet it is rare for it to stay running. Unless your going nothing but uphill and pull off to stop, ussually it only take a little downhill or less load, slower to bring EGTs down. I have had occasional times pulling over where I watched EGT and let it run a bit before shutdown. But in 12 years, less than 5 times.

Well I'm glad I had the EGT probe installed. Running the tow tune on the Mini Maxx, EGT got to 1450 before defueling while climbing a long steep mountain pass. Switched to stock and EGT stayed down but less power. I will be investing in 4" exhaust and possibly upgrade the intercooler down the road depending on what the exhaust does.

That's hot. Stock exhaust? That is definitely playing with fire, literally.
Even with 4" you will have to watch EGTs on a hot tune.

Yes, stock exhaust. Over 1300 for a few seconds and hit 1450 for just a second before defueled. Definitely worth having the EGT monitor and setting the defuel level. Now I know where I'm at and what I need to do. Towing everywhere else except the long pass they stayed under 1250.

The most I've ever seen on mine is around 1100, and that was with a 7-8k trailer going up a steep grade. I have a 4" turbo-back exhaust, Edge tuner (set to tow when pulling), everything else stock except 295 tires. Might be also because I have a 6-speed, downshifting as needed.

With that kind of EGT, I would hope your tune is is a real hot one or something may be wrong. On my ~60hp tow tune (MPT tow tune), towing about 12,000 lbs, I saw a max of around 1100 toward the top of a 7 or 8 mile stretch of 6% grade at 70mph at near full throttle. I have a 4" turboback exhaust, but didn't ever see more than 1150 with the stock exhaust, even when towing the same load, minus 1,000lbs, with same tune. My gearhead SRL+ tune (over 120hp) would just barely get to 1300 on a WOT run from 0 to 80+mph.

stock injectors and turbo?

I would suspect either the edge tuning, clogged cat, a boost leak and/or dirty air filter to be making those kind of exhaust temps. These 6.0s aren't nearly as prone to high EGT as a 5.9 cummins or even a 7.3. How do I know? I've had all 3. first the 7.3, then the 6.0 and now a common rail 5.9 High Output cummins.

FWIW, I have no preference between the cummins and a bulletproofed 6.0. The 6.0 makes more power without upgrading turbo, injectors, fuel, etc, all while making lower EGT, but the cummins is a little cheaper and way easier to work on.

It's and H&S Mini Maxx, was running the tow tune pulling an 8,000 lb trailer. Coming back I kept it on the stock power level and egt stayed in the 1100-1200 range. I'm going to get a straight 4" exhaust with cat delete put on soon. I bought the truck used and had all the bulletproofing work done after. Turbo isn't stock and was replaced at some point, but I don't think it's a bigger wheel or anything. Injectors were all replaced but previous owner didn't indicate they were anything but stock injectors. On the performance tune (120+ hp) it get's up to 1200+ pretty quick when you stomp on it. EGT probe is mounted on the exhaust manifold just before it goes to the up pipe.

So what is the next best thing to do in order to lower egt after I do the exhaust? Upgraded intercooler? Right now I have a cold air intake and a Banks Hi Ram and going to do a 4" turbo back with a resonator.

Change tuners. I run PHP's 65hp Tow and on a long pull uphill I see 1150-1200 max, 850-900 on the flats. The KEM tow tune runs about 200* hotter.
