Question Question about axles

So I have a '79 f100, currently with a 351W in it, but I'm planning to eventually do a Cummins swap. Is the Dana Super 60 a good idea for this? What would be the best?

2WD or 4x4? A 351W is not stock, but an easy replacement from the 302 in some 2WDs. Are you sure it is not a 351M?

Those that have more experience with the Cummins can steer you better, but the first thing I noticed was a F100. You will have a lot more to worry about in the beefing up the suspension department than you will with which axle is better. Those are heavy engines.

It's a 4x4. I apologize, I was reading up about the 351, it is a 351M.

What do you recommend, then?

Like I said, the Cummins crowd will eventually join in here and please listen to them rather than me, but from the little I have read you will be looking at custom made springs. But I have yet to see anything on a F100/150 which had front coils rather than leafs. I fear that one fact could be a HUGE challenge as from what I recall on my F100, the coil bucket is not all that stout. It was designed for a much lower weight. My first thought would be a conversion to leaf springs on the front or some fabrication work to beef up the stock coil mounts.

That said, the best answer I can offer for your axle question is D60 front seems to be the weapon of choice and the rear could be a matching D60 or stick with the 9".

A quick reading list that may help:
