Here's my take.....because I'm doing it. I have an 09 and bought a Frontier on a somewhat local on line auction. Auction listed it as an 11 to current. For the price ($215 which includes tax & buyers premium). Here's a link PRODUCTS
Anyways, the 08-10 grilles go up with the hood. The newer ones don't (I think). I am cutting off the brackets that bolt the grille guard to the bumper bolts and adding about an inch so the grill will clear. I will post some pics as I go. Hope this helps

Temporary fit up
Basically cut off the brackets then I will add a filler in between. Test fit again and then fab something under the bumper to the frame. I know its easier to buy the correct thing, but sometimes little projects like this are kinda nice. Undecided on the color
One other thing-the bottom bars on the newer style follow the bumper instead of going straight across. I really don't see an issue
