Glow plug help?

I'm working on re building a 1984 6.9L IDI and I just put new glow plugs in and it was starting fine but now it's having trouble I looked at the plug that goes in the controller and it's missing one of the 6 metal pieces is there anyway I can replace it or what else could be my problem
Thanks for any help

Did you use motorcraft plugs? If not, then get those cheapos out IMMEDIATELY before they swell. There is a thread on this forum that explains how to remove swelled Autolite plugs.

first step is to install a small light bulb in the cab in line with the glow plugs to see if they are getting power or not. i do not trust the wait to start light.

They get power and I have a new relay solenoid that I just put in (it was setting in a field for 5 years before I started working on it that might be part of the problem)

if you are positive the glow plugs are getting power and it does not start, either A: the new glow plugs are bad. (very doubtful)
or B: the problem is fuel related and not glow plug related. (more likely)

I second that.

To the OP, why did you think the starting problem was GP related?

'84 does not have a WTS light. The GP light is wired directly to the switched side of the contact circuit of the relay, so it is in effect "in line" (well, in parallel, actually) with the GPs.

When it's warmed up and the motor is still hot it will start but when it's been setting and cold it won't start and when it finally starts you can see a large cloud of smoke come out my exhaust. Also I had it starting on its own for about 2 weeks and the first time it was The glow plugs they were all bad and had been used when they were shot
