Front Pinion Bearing Replacement

Hey guys! I have a 96 f150 with 3.55LS in the rear. I need to replace the front pinion bearing, but I've never done this before. Is it similar to replacing front wheel bearings? And does anyone know the proper procedure for replacing the front pinion bearing? Any info is much appreciated!

I believe it is pressed in place.

Generally, pinion bearings are referenced as inner (larger, closest to ring gear) and outer (smaller, closer to drive shaft). The inner is pressed on to the pinion shaft. The outer is not pressed, and should be easily removable once the pinion nut, flange, and seal are removed. Removing the race from the housing is pretty straightforward with a good brass drift and hammer (after removing everything from the axle housing). I'd recommend replacing both bearings though, with a new crush sleeve between them. Simply reuse the original pinion shim that sits between the pinion gear teeth and the inner pinion bearing (this is critical). You can carefully cut the inner bearing off the shaft if you don't have the right tools. To install the new bearing, I heated the bearing in the oven to 300°F and cooled the pinion shaft in the freezer. Couple light taps and it went together with no press. Make sure you set the pinion bearing preload by the book with the new bearings installed. It's not too hard, but take your time and do not over tighten it. I know I've written more detailed how to's on here somewhere, try searching.
