Well it's been an ongoing problem with my 4r100, but last week it all come to a point. Reverse delay is getting to near 10seconds then abruptly engages. My 1-2 shift is so soft I have to look down and see my tach to make sure it shifted up. I now have trans squeal during ever shift including OD. Also have a loud screech that gets louder the faster you go, BUT the old girl is still moving the truck and oddly the fluid isn't burnt looking or smells burnt? That's one has me puzzled... so Tuesday after work I'm pulling the transmission (in the driveway) and bringing it to the shop Thursday. Getting a billet steel converter, having all the planetary gears upgraded to six and four pinion, one way sprag will now be solid steel instead of the plastic one Ford put there, all the bearings will be upgraded to Torrington, I'll have the 45 roller sprag bearing upgrade as well as the 17 roller for reverse, I'm going with Borg Warner and Kolen steels, new solenoid pack, I'm having the pump pump machined and sonnex upgrades done to it, spiral snap ring on OD piston, case will be machines not hand resurfaced, reverse gear plastic washers will be removed and the gear is getting machined for a Torrington bearing and steel spacer, clutch drum will be machined for a 360 spiral clip, locking snap ring on the OD piston, center support will have some machine work done to it, and I'm having the forward drum plug removed and the hole will be tapped for a steel plug.
Yes I'm adding more clutches and plates, I'm basically making a heavy duty version that can handle the power of a 500hp 7.3 that swap might possibly be in the future...
I talked to Mr woods and Brian from BTS and I'm taking some things that each of them do and adding it to my 4r100. Plus making my 5.4 sissy version into the better v10/7.3 one, with all the upgrades plus the 6.0 cooler and the new spin on external filter I'm doing there is no way I can see this trans not serving forever! I don't have a plow and I don't tow anywhere near max anymore but I do haul some weight on occasion so yea I'll have a super trans now

[QUOTE=Yahiko;16358556]I see a broken bank account in your near future.
But for a good cause.
I'm paying cash and pulling the transmission myself, was quoted $2000 after we sat down for an hour and discussed what I wanted and what he is gonna do
I thought the 5.4 and 6.8 shared the same model 4R100 and the 7.3 had the beefier version with the different bell housing.
5.4 is neutered down with less clutches/rings and has fewer pinion planetary gears. 5.4/v10 use same case BUT V10/7.3 have beefed up internals and the 7.3 uses a different larger case at the bellhousing
I was going to say the same thing. You're going to put all that money into the 5.4 trans and it won't bolt up to a 7.3 so unless you plan on keeping the 5.4 for another 250k miles I would say it's a waste of money. It's your money though still sounds like it will be a good trans when its done.
There's companies that make adapter plates for this kind of swap, or a Cummins swap, or a 5.4 to Allison swap. And if I do a swap it will most likely be a V10 swap. Yes I'd like a tuned up 7.3 (my dad had a beautiful 2000 F350) and I know and like them motors, but I've driven V10's of the 99-04 era and with my 4.30 gears the power/torque will be all I need. So having the trans ready for future maybes is something I want. And if I keep the 5.4 then that's ok with me also, at least I know my trans is built the way it should have been and will last longer than it did for a basically 80% unworked truck that's babied
Well my cousin backed out on me again so last night me and my ten year old son pulled the tranmission from the truck. Started at five and had it all out and cleaned up by 8:30, went nice and smooth luckily
It seems like ford would have saved money by just putting the v10 trans in the 5.4 and only having one gas motor transmission to deal with but what do I know I'm sure they did it for a reason and I'm sure it had to do with money. Just don't be like the guy down the road from me pulled the trans out of his 7.3 like 4 months ago now took him like 2 weeks to get it out and its still just sitting there with the drive shaft on the ground. haha
Nope me and my little guy got her pulled in under four hours, cleaned up the mess put the tools away and I lugged that heavy sucker into the back of my work van. Dropped it off after work and the guy told me to wait while they pulled it apart so we can see first hand what direction I wanted to go in. Clutches and steels were ok for 149k but the front pump is destroyed, looks like the bushings went and it chewed itself up and dug gouges and grooves.
