This is under the valve cover , it says 302 , and with the picture, there is no gap between the water pump and head,

OK so it's a 302. What parts do you need for it? 302s were put into many different vehicles, and ranged from good to pathetic back to really good over the many years of production. Water pumps are different depending on the donor vehicle. I don't know the differences, but I would simply suggest if you need a part, take the old one with you to make sure you get the right one.

2L9 but there is also an A it appears.

IF 2L9, that should be:

2, as in 1972

L, for November

9 for the 9th day of November.

The "9" should be "09".

Where did you find this stamping?

For the waterpump, take the old one with you. There were a couple varieties.. The way the back seals up and the length of the snout iirc.

Valve cover gaskets are the same all years.

Thermostat, take the old one with you. I do not believe there is much variance other than temperature.

Oil and Filter: Good multi grade, Motorcraft FL1A.

Battery Cables, just get the right length.

So i obviously don't know much about old trucks but is there a reason someone would put a 302 in there for a 250? Like better power or somthing ?

Previous owner found it, was clueless, so installed it.

No one that was "in the know" would install a gutless 302 in one of these F250's.
