Steering Rack, Bolts Replacement Source

The love of the Aerostar and the desire to keep her in tip top shape is a weekly challenge. Todays challenge, finding these bolts and nuts. They attach the steering rack. Picture of the broken one enclosed. Want and need to replace them both. Schematics list different part numbers. It is a 1994 E4WD

Help. Where to find and the correct part number so as to replace. Not real comfortable with one bolt holding things together. Having an old car can be a saga. Picture enclosed. BRGDS, TIA,

patrick

Have you tried the parts department at a dealership? Take your VIN with you and see if they are available. If they aren't (and they probably won't be), see if the parts man will give you the Ford part number and start trying to track them down. Other dealers might have them rat-holed away or see if Green Sales (and obsolete Ford parts source) might have them.

So the two parts I'm looking for would be Ford Part #N805626 and the nut N801206, methinks according to the ford manual for that year on the Aerostar.

Ideally would like to fix both at once. Both yield slim search results. The GreenSales Place lists it as N805626S100 but no price. Suspect this NOS piece might cost a pickle. Haven't been to the dealer. Any ideas of substitutes or workarounds and how risky is it to drive with the bolt in not fixed, inserted but not attached having just the good bolt left? (As long as it doesn't drop to the ground and run me off the road at 70.. TIA, BRGDS,

patrick

N805626S100 | RearCounter.com | 7 found at 2 sellers

This site shows two places have this piece, including Green Sales. Give them a call. They've never gouged me on an obsoleted, discontinued part.

So the S100 after the part number means it's the same part? And the nut, same thing can't seem to find on Greens..without a s100 or s60 suffix..Thanks for all your help.

If there are no new out there try this site. Search the USA for rack. Probably can find yard that still has the body with good bolts still attached that will pull and mail.

N801206-S2 nut M10, and there are tons of dealers out there with them.

The N805626-S100 is a M12 bolt, size M12X1.75X139. and it looks like 2 dealers have that.

The -S2 and -S100 are part of the PN, what you see on the list above are the call out numbers/base numbers.

Does this note apply to what I am replacing?
I have ordered the bolts and nuts from Green Company. When I look at the schematic and the bolt that has the broken part on it, wondering if that is all that I need to complete the repair of changing the bolts on both sides. Wondering about the repair nut mentioned in the above insert. Tried to find that part at the dealer and Greens without success. Is that something I need in addition to the parts I ordered? 2 bolts and two nuts.

TIA, BRGDS, Patrick

Actually had a chance to look at the catalog, the PN you list is actually a FO9Z 3T504-A, T-NUT, STEERING GEAR TO FRAME CROSSMEMBER (NR), and I don't see any avail out there.

Also I am not sure about the PN's you ordered. I see a N803677-S150, Bolt M16X2.0X213, (NR) for the main bolts holding the rack onto the frame (only 1 dealer shows it), and a N800237-S301 (still available).

When I check the first PN you list, the N801206-S2 look like nuts that you use to hold the lower cross member on. And when I look at N805626-S100, I see it in the same diagram that you list, so ????

I will post a pic later of what I am talking about.

In this caption from an Autozone picture, bolt looks the same as in the 1994, seems like the part numbers are the ones you mention, but date of vehicles is different and not E4WD. (if any of these helps) Wondering how interchangeable those two frame bolts are and if they are used in other fords? Should receive the bolts from greens any day now, also have someone pulling the bolts and accoutrements from a 1994 E4WD in Fairbanks. Thanks for helping to clarify what I need and where I might find it. New would be best, willing to order again if need be.

Here is the pic which is listed in the catalog under E4WD, so we have a conundrum.

Going by the pictures in all the above schematics, the bolt looks more like the two schematics posted earlier in my posts. Wondering what a cross parts reference book would say. aomething should be able to fit and attach in there maybe in a later model year. They could have changed the design and bolt mid 1994. In any event the bolts ordered from Green will arrive soon and then the fun begins..

For the record, the bolts N805626S100 came in from Green Sales, a sealed Ford Package of 2, exact ones for the one shown in original post, and you are correct the nuts are not the ones.

Now wondering what nuts I can use on this that will work. Just ordered the Moog K8424 Rack and Pinion Bushing set.

Any Ideas on a nut that will work? The bolt size is M12x1.75x139.5H. Maybe someone with a cross reference book or has changed the nuts can help?

TIA, BRGDS,

patrick

If you have the old nuts, go to any industrial Bolt and Screw supplier to find equivalents.

The real problem will be that the drivers side nut on the bolt is a special nut pressed into the frame with a shaft on it to catch the bolt coming thru the steering rack.

See the above note from the repair manual in previous post on replacing the nut. As seen in the original post of the bolt remainder of that shaft is still on the broke bolt there is a shaft on the nut that is pressed into the frame with the nut that grabs the bolt.

Another member commented none available...

Guess screwed (double entendre) unless i can find that specific repair nut. Had bought the nuts that fit the bolts but doesn't reach the end of the bolt. Seems used in 91 and forward Aerostars.

Now looking for alternative fixes and hoping someone on the board can list a cross reference from another ford that a repair nut can be had that can be inserted into the frame after knocking the old nut out of the crossmember.

Anybody else had this problem with any year aerostar? Anybody drove around a long time with only one bolt holding a rack? Willing to pay money for one, if indeed one can find one. Had a wrecking yard try to get the nut out of the frame on a junked aerostar to no avail.
