Part Numbers Rationale

Is there any?

For instance, I Google "13032" from the MPC looking for a headlight adjusting screw.

In return I get listings for these:

My question is about the prefix. Does the "E7TZ" always decode to a 87/91 F Series or maybe to the headlight system used in those trucks? Is there anyway to decode or even predict a prefix when parts hunting?

The first character is the decade in which it was engineered, with the second character being the year - as outlined here: Part Number Decode.

Thank you, Gary! Keeps me from having to write it out.

That identifier - 13032 - that looks like some sort of assembly rather than a mere screw or bolt.

Hardware such as screws, bolts, nuts, washers, etc. are prefixed with S- or N- or some such. For example, S-123456 might be some bolt someplace.

Actual parts & assemblies don't have those prefixes, they instead have the basic group number as an identifier. Or, so it seems to me.

I am fully expecting Bill (NumberDummy) to come stomping into here, grumbling about how I'm so wrong because there are so many exceptions, and he'll give explicit examples of, say, the wing nut from a 1971 300 cid six-banger doesn't have an S or N (or whatever) prefix when it did in later years.

Or, something like that.

Cool.

Well then, he will likely know about the parenthesized notations as well. I await the audience.

I need to spread some reps. They await, Bill.

IIRC the stuff in parenthesis refers to a bin number and location (or some such).

If Bill sees this thread, he will get us cleared up.

I was somewhat reluctant to respond for that reason. But, I got over it.
