460 oil change, spark plugs, and fuel filter. Advice

Ok, about to do the first bit of maintenance on my new to me 1993 F250 with a 460. I am the second owner of this all original 38,000 mile truck. Since the truck sat a lot during its life and I have no records of its maint history I want to do a few things so I have a few questions.

1. What oil and weight should I use? Synthetic?
2. What spark plugs are recommended for this 460? Gap?
3. I want to put a new fuel filter in. What's it entail? Special tools?

I did that to my 93 460 two summers ago.

Oil. Motorcraft 5/30 partial synthetic. Regular Dino is fine too. You can get it at Walmart.

Get a new set of Motorcraft plug wires. The old ones might rip when you remove them to change the plugs.

I buy most of my parts at the link below. They charge wholesale and will ship anywhere. https://parts.autonationfordwhitebea...dex.php?p=cart

Be super careful with the vacuum hoses. They are brittle with age and can break with the slightest touch when you are deep into the engine bay to loosen the plug wires. If you break a hose use a proper ID sized fuel line to splice the hose.

Vacuum hoses are no longer available.

Look in your owners manual for plugs and gap. Use Motorcraft plugs.

Same with oil and fuel filters, use Motorcraft. The prices are good at the link above. I use Tasca sometimes as well. They are not as knowledgeable as Ford and sometimes have incorrect part numbers. 1Aauto is good for non OE parts. Very good service and free freight. 1A has some good videos for our trucks.

Consult with YouTube on how to change the fuel filter.

Have fun!

Thanks for the reply. I already replaced a bunch of vacuum hose. It was rotten. I went and got some new universal hose from the auto parts store.

Pretty much all of that is completely up to personal preference. Motorcraft is hardly the end-all of replacement parts.

I personally use Rotella T 10w30 oil, Motorcraft oil filters, NGK and Autolite plugs, whatever cap and rotor is priced at what I feel like spending, pretty much any plug wire with a lifetime or high-end warranty, pretty much any fuel filter.. About the only part I'd be picky on are fuel pumps. There are a lot of junk pumps (electric) on the market.

The only special tools you'll need are the fuel line disconnect tools for the fuel filter. You can possibly rent them from where you get your parts.

I buy a lot from rockauto.com - and do NOT buy anything that is not name brand from Autozone. If it's their own brand, just stay away.

I respectfully disagree on plug wires. I use Taylor wires in my '74 Alfa Romeo and they work great.

I tried Taylor wires on my 93 F250 7.5 and the wires would not seat properly, causing misfire. I replaced with Motorcraft wires and the problem is solved.

I'd say you some how just got a bad set. The terminals used on this truck are old as dirt, every manufacturer knows how to make them by this point in time.

The only real difference IME on consumables is how long they're going to last for the most part. I've used, at some point, nearly every brand of plug wire and plug that you can get at a chain store really with no discernible differences in performance, in stock use.

And at $38 for a set of Motorcraft plug wires why even bother with something else that "might" fit.

The Taylor's I got from Summit Racing had tiny boots that have a poor seal. Summit's site said they were right for my F250. Nothing but a waste of time.
