I have changed my own oil for the past few times in my 99 expedition. I was told that if the engine indicator is not reset, the truck doesn't know that the oil has been changed, and the "service engine soon" light comes on after a set amouont of mileage. This has happened. Does anyone know the procedure for resetting this light when the oil has been changed? In my Honda it is a process like " hold down odometer button while turning the key to accessory position, continue to hold for 20 secondsuntil light goes out". This didn't work for the expedition so there must be some other procedure. Does anyone know what it is?? Thanks
Did your owners manual state this? I have never heard of such a thing from the MIL lamp. I have only seen anything remotely like this on a Message Center.
If the light has come on, there is something else going on. To reset the light, just disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, and reconnect it after 30 sec. If the light comes back on after this, you might take it to Auto Zone and get the codes read.
The best way to get the "service engine soon" light to go out would be to...you guessed it...get the engine serviced...soon. This has nothing at all to do with an oil change, unless the actual oil changed has caused a problem.
