'53 door mirrors

Well... I thought I'd bought the door mirrors years ago... but... went thru every shelf and drawer in the shop today and they ain't there...

so... I'm shopping. Back at the supernats years ago I remember seeing some oversized mirrors for our trucks... probably 4 or 4.5" in diameter with the same arm and mount... does anyone remember these ?? and know where to find them ???

thanks
John

as soon as I buy some... the originals will magically appear on the work bench

Are you looking for the small chrome ones or stock ones?

The mirrors that were on my truck as far back as 1958 were 5 !/2 inches in diameter. Sadly, they are no longer usable. For the time being, I am using cheap modern replacements. I must say though that the cheap modern replacements do work well.

I'll be watching your thread to see if anyone comes up with a source for the larger round period correct replacement mirrors. The actual diameter of my original mirrors--including the frame-- is 5 3/4 inches.

Truck parts catalogs do not show a pic of the chrome mirror w/5" mirror head that fit into the door slots thru 1966.

Here's what you have (upper pic). The mirror head could be purchased separately, but...

1C-17723-A (replaced 21CS-17718-B) .. Mirror Head with attaching parts / Obsolete

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any, but there are other round mirror heads from 1957/66 that may work. I'll have to take a look-see, then report back.

I guess first I have to find out what will fit the stock arms for the '53-56

it looks like (from the picture) that the mirror head screws into the arm... hard to tell without seeing the back side of the head... I just need to find a larger head that will fit the arm and threads... and pretty like the stock ones

jim... looking for stock... but with larger head

52USCG.... you've about got all the mirror you can out of those

When I couldn't find any round mirror heads (all were obsolete-no one had any) from 1957/66, I looked at Carpenter's online catalog.

Surprise! Carpenter has reproduced the 1940/52 round painted mirror head. His part number: D1C-17723 (Ford was IC-17723-A) = $14.95.

He also has the chrome round mirror head for the door slot mirrors that the OP is looking for: His part number: BAAA-17696-H = $24.95.

John, the stock mirrors are not what you are looking for. As Jim asked, the stock arms and mirrors are the ones in the parts manual that Bill posted, the one on the bottom half that says 1953 typical adjustable mirror. The pretty chrome ones with the round head are not stock to 1953-56. They were first used in 1957. They do of course fit our 53-56 trucks.

The stock ones are the ones I have on my 54 and my 55:

John I am going to try and make a right side bracket that is longer and also bends back and up some or maybe other way around . Right now the right side as you know is useless for the driver so I am going to experiment with some flat stock and see what works. I looked all over at the nationals not knowing that each side is the same in length.

Thanks Bill for the additional sources. I checked out Dennis Carpenter's mirrors and they are 5 inch--a little smaller than mine but they should still work for me. I would probably go for 6 inch mirrors if I could get 2 that are the same. I didn't contact Klimesh Motor Sales yet.

The mirror kits I listed in post 11 are for 1953/55 & 1956. I couldn't find any 1948/52 mirrors, but I don't have the original part numbers. Ford changed them some time in the mid/late '50's.
.
Truck (and one car) parts catalogs I use in this forum: 1953 Ford/Mercury Canadian bound paper, printed May 1953. 1956/57 bound paper, printed February 1957.

1948/56 bound catalog (also have the hipoparts.com CD version), final edition, printed 1964. 1949/59 Ford passenger car (hipo C/D version), also final edition, printed 1964.

I also have a beat to death "Green Bible" .. 1928/47 Ford trucks & 1928/48 Ford cars.
