Just curious if anyone had any advise on what to do/check to figure out why I'm getting 10 mpg in my '00 f250 7.3. Should be more like 14 city/18 freeway right?
WE'll need a lot more to go on. Are you towing any thing? Running a tuner or chip? Any mods to truck or engine? In the mountains?
How's your running gear? Brakes dragging? U-joints binding? I will occasionally put my truck in neutral( I have a very flat drive way) and lean on it to see if I can roll it a few feet. It's a heavy truck but should roll as long as nothing is binding. The slide pins on the brakes on these trucks are known to rust and bind up. Can cause a dragging brake.
Boost leaks will rob you of a lot of power causing your to push the throttle harder and burn fuel. Any soot on your up pipes or exhaust mainfolds? Have you ever done a leak check of your boots?
A clogged EBP sensor tube can cause a little loss of MPG.
If your running gear checks ok and you've never done a CAC system leak check then here's how to make a leak detector. Just don't over pressurize or STAND IN FRONT OF THE THING WHEN YOU PUMP IT UP. Don't ask how I know.
Hi, thanks for getting back. Love your icon by your screen name! 😉
OK so I've confirmed that nothing is dragging as it rolls very easily. I am in mid Michigan to answer the mountains question. I am not towing, and it has a banks six gun tuner in it. pic attached. I've only turned it up a couple times for a short time. The display shows boost psi and it got up to I think 17 when I was really pushing it. Is that indicative of a boost leak? What should the psi read at the high end?
I have never done a boost leak test on it. I have only put about 400 miles on it since I've owned it. It doesn't put you back in the seat as much as I thought it should so I should do that. It runs really clean too, zero smoke under load and very very little on cold start. I haven't noticed any soot buildup at all.
I have a set of off-road tires on it, would that drag it down that much?
As you can see there's a cold air inake off a semi truck installed, the guy who owned it before me was a diesel mechanic so it was maintained too. As for other mods I'm not sure.
How are you calculating your milage? If you're using the overhead monitor it is going to be far from accurate, especially with a chip or programmer installed. Have you adjusted your speedo for your aftermarket tire size? This will throw your readings off again.
If you are hand calculating then this first issue above would not apply to you.
The air filter is a 6637, the same a lot of guys use, including me. This should not affect your fuel economy in a negative way.
The biggest factor with fuel economy is your right foot. The harder you press the pedal the more fuel you will consume. These engines also get thirsty above about 2000 RPM's
I am not even going to mention the 6-gun at this point.....
Well I topped the tank off ,and it's a 33 gallon right? So if I average say 15 mpg city/hwy I should get 500 miles to the tank? I'm at half tank and 200 miles, and when the gauge says half tank, I say it lies. It stays at the top half for a long time and then falls fast. I think I'll hit 370 or so when the fuel light comes on.
Yeah the speedometer is spot on.
I know the filter wouldn't affect mileage, just saying it has had some aftermarket equipment on it.
I feel like I'm fairly conservative with the throttle. I'm not running it hard. As for the 6-gun I have it set to level 1 out of 6 which is stock settings.
I have only put about 400 miles on it since I've owned it.
That's not nearly enough miles to get a good indication of fuel economy. Since it's tuned there's really no reliable reading to be had from any overhead console.
The tank might be rated for "xx" gallons, but what you'll actually end up filling it with will be far different. There's a popular mod that is done inside the fuel tank called "harpooning". Basically it means cutting off the breather tube to allow you to fill the tank all the way.
If that mod hasn't been done, you aren't filling it up to capacity. You'll be anywhere from 3-7 gallons short, depending on how much it foams while you fill. This will completely throw off your mileage calculations, and cause it to run to half tank much quicker than you expect.
You can try dribbling fuel to fill it completely, that means another 10+ minutes at the pump. It gets frustrating quick.
Best bet is to track total miles and total gallons filled over the course of 5+ complete tanks. That will get you closer to your actual average.
Thank you pocket, that helps me a lot. Last time I topped the tank I put in 30 gallons. It was a little over E. I'll have to look and see if it was harpooned then, since I was able to get it so full it may have been done.
I will just wait and see what happens for the next several months and revisit if it seems to still be bad. Thanks a lot guys! So glad to have you all as a support team! I'm still a newbie diesel owner so I'm leaning a lot!
my truck needs injectors, but other than that there is nothing wrong with it, and there are no trouble codes. i also only get 10-11 mpg no matter what i do. my problem is 4.10 gears in a 8800 lb truck.
