Mechanical fuel pump

I have an almost new, great working, fuel pump. I think its called the heavy duty version, has 3 connectors. Its of my 86 f250 with 351w and duel tanks.

Im working on my 84, almost the same truck, has single tank. The fuel pump on it only has 2 connectors.

Can i use the "heavy duty" pump on my 84? If i remember right the extra connector was for fuel returning to the tank.

On my 460 the third port is for return.

I don't think that pump is going to work for you, because as soon as the float bowls fill up it is going to pump fuel on the ground.

If i was to swap the fuel puckup fron the 86 it should work ,yea? Im just trying to use the new parts i have instead of buy new again.

Im pretty sure the fuel pump on the 84 is bad, tank was full and couldnt get fuel to the carb before i started working in the truck. Gauge read empty. I did drop the tank and the fuel was very old and bad. I had a new tank so i put it in.

You will need -both- new (dual port) senders and a new switching valve along with all the return lines.

Really, it would be a LOT easier to get the *correct* pump.

It could be that the pump is bad, or it could be that you have a leak on the suction side (before the pump)

The pump will draw air much easier than fuel.
This is known as sucking wind.

Check or replace all the lines between the pump and tanks before you condemn the pump.

I might be wrong but i wouldnt need a switching valve since im only running one tank. I have all the parts on what is now my parts truck.

My under standing is the pickup has 2 lines on it. One to suck fuel to the pump and one to ruturn extra fuel from the pump back to the tank. Nothing in the middle of either lines, other than the selector on a duel tank setup.

Im not positive avout all this but pretty sure. Ill look when i can.

Sorry, I saw dual tanks in post #1 and thought this is what you had...

Yeah, you need a return line back to your single tank.

It sounds like you have a good game plan.
Only thing I would check for is if there is a restrictor in the return line.
I say this because I know of other makes do this with the fuel filter that has 3 ports - 1 in from pump, 1 out to carb, small 1 return to tank.

Thanks for the heads up, im just going to use the line from the parts truck so if it does have a restrictor it'll go with the move haha.
