Hello all, the time has come to replace my 01 escape. Currently looking at 05-08 explorers. I would really like to find one that is 4x4 with the v8. That said, i am ok with 2wd and the v6. Is there anything i should watch out for on these trucks?
When i bought my escape, i specifically avoided the 4x4 version after reading all of the horror stories , following a test drive of one with a noisey transfer case.
My current escape is white and has the paint peeling issue that i see with alot of the white ones. Does the explorer have the same issue?
Planning to look at a clean 07 with 120k on the clock. Owner has already had the timing set replaced. Asking $6500.
The 4.0 SOHC motor is a grenade with a loose pin. The 5 speed automatics are similar. If there are maintenance records, that's good. Listen for noise, rattle, commotion etc on start up. Check shifting. A flare between gears is a negotiating point or deal killer.
I agree with 85e150six4mtod. The 4.6L 3-valve V8 engine is a far better choice than the 4.0L SOHC V6 with those cassettes. With the V8 of that year vintage some have broken off an exhaust manifold stud here and there, but overall a much better engine choice than the V6. Along with the V8, you'll get the better 6R60 transmission with it.
