I have a 2000 Explorer XLT 2wd V8 (69k miles) that is making a soft clunking noise that can be felt through the steering wheel when the wheel is turned to the right. The noise occurs at even intervals, almost like a ratchet. If the wheel is turned slowly to the right two inches, it makes one clunk... another two inches... another one. It can be heard when turning slowly and when the vehicle is parked and the steering wheel is turned
I'm somewhat puzzled as to why it would only make this noise/feeling when turned to the right...
I go to college in New Orleans so I don't really know of any good, honest repair shops in the area... and money is a little tight due to a family illness, so any help anybody could offer would be greatly appreciated. I would love to resolve the problem myself if the repair is not too complicated/does not require too many specialized tools.
I have the same probelm with my 2000 EB 5.0 2WD. The sound only happens when braking and turning and only to the right. No braking, no noise. If I am not turning the steering wheel it does not make the noise during right hand turning. It only occurs during active right hand turning and braking.
Thanks for the reply... have you consulted your dealer about it? I had a trusted shop in Texas inspect the steering and front suspension and found no problems. I'm stumped.
Does it clunk when going over potholes, train tracks, etc? Another possibility you may consider is the stabilizing arm bushings. Mine went bad but I couldn't tell where the noise was coming from for the longest time because sometimes you can't tell by looking at them. If the clunk feels like it's in the driver or passenger side floorboard, then there's a good chance that's what it is. It will also be felt in the steering.
