Question transmission question

So i posted eilier today that my truck trans died. I went out 5 hours later and it moved fine foward like nothing happened. SO when this happened a code was thrown and the trans light came n in the dash, then i lost foward motion except the motor was still running. I push the gas and nothing would happen except the revving of the engine. It just sat for 5-6 hours and now it works fine so far. Would a code shut down the trans like that? I dont know what the code was but wondering if there would be a safty shuftdown depending on the code.. Granted i do need a new trans im sure at 280k on the original 4r100. so i am still going to pursue that... thanks Jeff

To properly address the issue you need to retrieve the code/codes.

No, a code cannot do that. The trans can have a failure that will cause this, and that will set a code.

Same thing happen to a friend. He actually had the truck towed. The next day it moved, so he decided to drop the pan to look for the ugly stuff, but only found a clogged filter. New fluid, drained the converter and installed new filter and he is back towing heavy with no problems.

clogged filter, how the hell did that happen. Must not have changed fluid for a LONG time. What could cause the filter to clog, by the way??

The only way a transmission filter can clog is if one or more clutches fail. There is part of this story missing.

What level is your trans fluid at? What condition is it in? Color, smell, etc.

I checked the color of the fluid. Looks nice and pink, no metallic in it and no burnt smell. It was up to level as well. This is my orig tans and I have 280 k on it. I do think i'm on overtime with it. I do pull a 34 foot camper and would hate to have it fail with that behind me this year. Autonation (formerly tousley ford) has the orig R4100 for 2349.50 including the converter. 300 for ship both ways sending the core back. (1000.00 core deposit) My local guy that does my work told me 500.00 to install it. At this point i think im proactive in heading off a total failure soon. Maybe this was a heads up...

hdman6, my transmission went through similar stuff a couple of years ago. I changed fluids etc. and hoped that was it, but it failed after about 6 months. It wouldn't move at all over the course of a couple of days. I finally had a friend come with a trailer to haul it in for the transmission change. On a whim, I tried to see if it would drive and it would. I ended up driving it to the transmission shop with him following just in case. You are on borrowed time.

He is still using the truck with no problems and pulling heavy. He has a Suncoast trans. The oil change people only drain the pan and never change the fluid. I will ask and see if he has a aluminum pan, maybe there is no mag

How can you drain the pan and not change the fluid? After draining the pan do they pour that fluid right back in? What's the point of that?

Have you ever seen the filter for one of these things? It's huge. I would think it would take a lot of clutch material to actually clog one to the point that the trans wouldn't function.

SMH in agreement.. something is going on for sure.

I have drained the pan, 5 qts, and refilled. I do this about 3 times over a couple weeks or so period(not a daily driver) with regular trans stuff.. When i get around to doing the water pump and 6,0 cooler I will do the complete flush with bucket taking the line off method and go back with mercon 5 or mobile one stuff.

also need to drop pan to install JW valve body I recently got and will change out filter as well.. probably not needed but I got one and have had it too long to return.

just draining and filling one time will not really doing a lot.

Sorry, I meant to say they don't drain the torque converter.

I think you are smart to replace that transmission. It is possible that a valve temporarily failed to operate and caused your no-go situation. The uncertainty of when is it going to not work again would bother me also.

If there are particles in the fluid, a replacement of the oil to air cooler, especially with the 6.0 - 26 row or larger cooler is not a bad idea. I have read on this site that they are hard to flush completely due to the small tube size. Some mechanics also recommend an inline filter when replacing the transmission.
