I have a 92 f150 custom. 5 speed with the 4.9. It's Rusty and beat up but runs great. I got it for $200 and want to do a rat rod type style with it, so I would like to start with lowering it. I can only find kits and methods for lowering 2wd trucks so I'm wondering if there is something about a 4wd that prevents people from doing it. If so would converting to 2wd be an option? If so what would I need to do?
The front driveline gets in the way of moving stuff down. In fact, a 4WD generally sits a couple inches higher than a 2WD to start with.
Yes, you can convert a 4WD to 2WD, but the easiest way is to sell it and buy a 2WD to start with. Otherwise the second easiest is to buy a 2WD truck and swap all of the front suspension parts and the transmission over to your 4WD truck. That's almost never worth it from a cost perspective, but MIGHT be if you have a really cherry truck or one with a lot of sentimental value. But in your case I'd strongly suggest buying the truck you actually want.
I think instead of going donor truck/new truck I'll just change to good winter beater truck/mudder? The 4wd manual shifter will need to be fixed but that seems like less of a hassle.
