Yes, it's a great idea for a vehicle with mileage and time on it. Since the transmission is already out of the way it takes only a few more minutes (okay 30) to R&R the rear main seal. Wise investment IMHO. I classify that as preventative maintenance.
Thanks, it has 191k so I will address the new deal with him, I don't know if he automatically does it or if it's a tack on price. Is there anything else you can tell me when he rebuilds the tranny?
The rear main seal is routinely changed when pulling the transmission and/or replacing a clutch. It's usually an added price for parts and a little bit of labor.
I don't know about a 94 but the older trucks you still have to remove the oil pan and rear main cap to replace the seal. I say leave it alone if it is not leaking.
