Trans Fluid change

Well newbie here. I Just bought a used 2005 F250 with 87K miles. Big step up from my old Toyota 2x4 Taco which the Grandson now inherits. I have come over to the dark side and I shall never go back. Great truck what a panzer. I am in the process of changing usual hoses belts, hoses etc and have pulled pan (auto) changed filter and am going to flush torque converter for final oil fill. Notice the filter on the oil cooler and am wondering if I just leave the filter off and run, will this work as well as cracking the feed line to the cooler.? I presume this is the feed line leading from the torque unit, through the filter and back to sump, so I am thinking this is rather a fortuitous find or am I wrong?

You're wrong. There are two problems with doing this. First, the filter is a bypass filter and only sees 10% of the flow to the cooler. Second, there is an internal thermostat. It's nominal opening temperature is 165F, so if you don't maintain the transmission above 170F it's just going to circulate the new fluid and mix it with the old fluid. I don't know of a way for a DIY guy to flush this transmission. You need a heated flush machine to do it, and they are extremely rare.

Well you confirmed a couple of concerns I had. As the owner of a 70 MGB with no thermo bypass on the engine oil and 100% direct cooling I wondered how they maintained trans temp in this truck. Any rate there is no way to crack feed lines as shown in some of the archived write ups and flush that way?

No. Only hot flush machine or hot flush DIY which looks like a PITA.

Usually guys drop the pan fluid which is about 8 qts. Drive the truck for a few months and do it again.

Amazing, the emphasis today on hydraulic systems, is to isolate everything from the fluid, including atmospheric moisture and Ford says the trans fluid is for the life of the truck. Well I did pull the pan, changed the filters etc so now I guess the solution to pollution is dilution. Thanks for the help, I shall return, that is for advise for the next project.

Where did you see that? I've never seen Ford recommend no fluid changes.

Your right I see from my manual they recommend at 120K. I thought I read that as a comment someone here had made, including a comment about never having seen Ford recommend a filter change with the oil. Like any forum it takes a while to feel out the situation. Still considering the difficulty of the change pretty much assures either limited or dilution type compliance. I presume a hot exchange has a very limited availability also not to mention a rather big $$$ commitment?

Also, make sure to use the correct fluid, either Mercon LV or Mercon SP.
I believe our 5r110 manual suggests a fluid change every 35k.
Check yours.

Good points but it appears the maint. guide shows tranny at 60k for this unit. Matters naught as it was not done, at least not recorded. Fluid didn't smell or appear burnt so I hope I missed a bullet. I generally just change everything belts etc when I buy a used vehicle due to spotty maint records. Reading about the spark plugs on this machine, it appear I am in for another test of skills. Oh well next weekend.

It's every 30,000 miles. From page 16 of your owner's guide.

Off topic, but WTH is a "CLIMATE CONTROLLED SEAT FILTER" found on Navigators, Expeditions and Aviators?

I don't even want to discuss what popped into my mind.

Part no# FS-104 filter for climate controlled seats, located under rear of the front seats one each side is a round slotted disc shaped cover about 2-2 1/2" on older models there is a cotton type fabric filter.
On new models it is just the slotted disc no fabric filter just clean to be free of dust/ lint.

He COULD put the 08+ pan and internal filter in and leave the remote filter canister empty...... then it could be every 60k.

HOT FLUSH MACHINE

You need a heated flush machine to do it, and they are extremely rare.
Can't find a shop with a hot flush machine anywhere in the Southeast.

Someone posted it's easier to find Big Foot than locate a shop with a heated flush machine.
