Suddenly quit moving.

'99 Explorer 5.0 4R70W AWD. Going up a hill it stopped moving; no noise just stopped. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Engine runs fine.

What happened when it stopped moving? Did the truck want to roll backward unless the brakes were held? Did the engine start to race like it was under no load? Have you tried manually selecting other gears (Reverse, 1, 2) to see if any of them allow the truck to move?

Hmmm, Park works but none of the other gears. I was starting to suspect that maybe a u-joint failed but if that were the case, I don't think Park would hold the vehicle stationary.

My transmission man said it's the transmission. He didn't take it apart yet but will when he comes back from vacation a week from Monday. I'll keep you informed.
