reverse troubles
Twice now while backing out of the drive, my '99 Explorer 5 spd. has had something stop it. The first time it was enough resistance that you could tell you weren't free-wheeling, the second time I stopped for fear of breaking something there was that much resistance. Jacked all four corners and it's not the brakes. Both times it only took a couple of hundred feet forward and everything was fine. The car moves only a foot or two then you feel the resistance. First thing in the morning both times. Any suggestions? 193K miles but I'm still not ready to let her go.

You mention it's not the brakes, but are you absolutely certain the issue is not with the rear parking brake shoes? They are well known for having the friction material come loose from the shoes and I could certainly understand that getting wedged such that it would increase rolling resistance, yet free up by changing direction. I can't really understand a transmission issue freeing up after several feet moving forward.
