It really sounds like a fuel issue to me. Your mechanic needs to verify the condition of the lines - hard and soft - and the tank fiting. Unless this fellow is giving you parts, he needs to be more methodical about trouble shooting entire systems. Focusing on one component because it 'Must Be X' is a sure path to a long, frustrating, non-solution.
Fuel, spark, compression.
Yeah, I didn't realize the OP was working with a mechanic to resolve the issue!
If you have questions about temperature anywhere under the hood, spend twenty bucks and get an infrared thermometer on the internet. I recall paying about that for mine. Harbor Freight has them but they are around thirty bucks. With ti you can check to see just how hot the engine and coil are getting. It also will give you the ability to check your hoses and radiator from top to bottom to see what kind of flow you are getting.
In addition to all the good items mentioned previously it also could be a fuel tank venting problem. The old tanks vented through the cap. Many of the replacement caps sold these days are non-vented. New cars are non-vented because they use a return system. The next time that it stalls try loosening the gas cap.

Oh that's a good one! Take the cap off and put your mouth over the center. You should be able to suck air through the center but not blow out. If neither then your cap is shot. Clever thought Pete!
