Hey all. My truck has started with a small head gasket leak. Rather than tear into the motor I thought of just building a motor because mine has 170k miles on it, lower than normal oil pressure and some minor leaking oil seals. I currently have a 351W and am looking to build another 351W.
What I am looking for is more torque and horsepower (mostly torque), better air intake and exhaust flow, without having to take the block to a machine shop to get it bored.
I found a short block for about $1000 here. May get a few of the parts they offer for the engine if it's worth it,
Thought about getting the Edelbrock Trick Flow intake manifold, unless you guys have better suggestions.
Maybe some Ford Racing cylinder heads, if they exist, or something that is better for about the same price.
Anything other suggestions are welcome.
Seeing as I have never heard of MABBCO I did a quick search. May want to check out the BBB complaints on them before jumping into a purchase. I'm not saying one way or another, just read for yourself.
Cheapest thing to do is reuse your rotating assembly and buy pistons for whatever over bore they deem necessary. Boring isn't for power 99.9% of the time.
Ported gt40s and a cam is a must if you want a cheap bump in power...reusing anything from the factory is a formula for a huge turd.
Thanks guys for the heads up on the MABBCO motor. With some research it looks as if GM motors have better quality from them than the Fords. Guess I'll look somewhere else for a short block. Any ideas?
Anyone have any luck with the short blocks from Summit Racing? Found this and wonder if it's worth the money.
The thing to do would be get ahold of that company and ask what the compression would be using whatever heads you plan on, what the warranty is etcetera. Typically summit doesn't sell junk so it's probably a decent deal, but you'll have to have your heads reworked if they have had a leak so add that into the price. It may be about the same price to buy a long block
Update: I've figured out what the coolant leak is and it's not the head gasket!!! My lower radiator hose has a small crack/hole in it where it meets the water pump. It would almost never leak in the driveway and leave a puddle, but I would always lose coolant when I was driving. What could have been a ~$3500 fix is now about $70.
The Better Business Bureau is a bit of a scam. Companies pay to be part of it so they have a good review. We had a dealership in our town that went bankrupt several times over to make problems go away, and the BBB kept saying great things about them. Its a bit of a joke.
