My mom has a 08 ford edge and the fan on that thing is loud and always running. The fan stays running for about 7-10 seconds after you turn the ignition off. People in drive throughs ask her to shut off her engine because they can't hear her though the speaker. It just keeps gettin louder and louder. She said it hasn't always ran all the time it just started doing that a few months ago. Does anyone else have/had this problem or know what to do?
Is this the cooling fan for the radiator? Is the coolant full?
Most cars run the radiator cooling fan when the AC is on, and running the fan after the car turns off is something that happens when the coolant and/or engine are hot. The AC condenser is in front of the radiator, and the AC works better if the condenser is getting cooling air through it.
If the fan itself is abnormally loud, it could be the bearings in the fan going bad in which case you need a new fan. Not a difficult job.
If the fan is running more than it should, either the engine is hotter than it should be for some reason, or the thermostat for the fan is turning it on at too low a temperature.
Open the hood while the fan is running and confirm which fan it is. If is making grinding or screeching noises, the bearings are going bad.
The Flex is notorious for eating cooling fans. Ours was replaced at 70,000, before we bought it, and it now needs another set at 130,000. I've searched all over looking to replace only the fan motor but they can't be had. You need to replace the entire assembly. The cheapest price I found was Rockauto.
