I have a 1982 F100 XLT Lariat with a 302. I've done quite a bit on my truck this weekend and have new wires I'm getting ready to put on. I'm crimping the ends so before I started I checked my firing order to make sure I get the wire lengths right.
For my truck, it should be 15426378. I decided to look up a diagram of the firing order on a distributor, and all the diagrams show the firing order as this, but my distributor is clocked completely different.
My firing order is correct, but on my distributor, my #8 is where #2 is on the diagram, and my #7 is where # 4 is, and so on. So in other words, it's like my distributor is clocked 180 degrees from where it should be.
Since I have an HEI distributor, my current setup makes some of the wires extra long in order to reach the points on the distributor, especially since I can't put the wires across the top of the distributor. The truck seems to run fine, but now I'm starting to question how I've got it set up.
I'm completely worn out from working my butt off today, so this may be a dumb question... Do I just set my engine at TDC then remove the distributor and preposition with the gears so that it's correct?

If it runs good, you have the firing order correct. It does not matter what the actual position is as long as the wires are in the correct order. The #1 on the cap is just an identifier so the person that's swapping wires knows where things are. Is it possible the HEI cap is marked different? Or the dizzy is put in 180 degrees out?

Right, but if I want to make it like what the diagram shows, I would need to set TDC then pull the distributor and put it back in so that #1 lands where #1 is on the diagram?
Like I said... It's been a long day for me and I'm beat so my mind isn't working correctly.. lol.
If the dizzy was 180 degrees out, I'd be having all kinds of problems. The dizzy isn't marked at all. I put it in a year ago or so but I didn't align it based on the diagrams, but now that I'm making my own wires, it absolutely makes sense to so the runs are as short as possible.
