Since the way you observe the wires on your distributor conflicts with your Haynes, you may have EEC-III igniton with a Dura Spark III distributor. You can confirm this if your distributor has no vacuum or mechanical advance mechanism on it. Also, there will be nothing inside the distributor except the shaft and rotor. There will be no stator/reluctor as in the Dura Spark II distributor and ignition.
The firing order is the same as (most) all other 302 engines: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
But, the the order the wires are arranged on the distributor cap is: 1-3-4-8-6-5-7-2
This is because the EEC-III distributor has electrodes on both sides of the rotor. It fires alternately from both sides. So even though it's wired in a different order, if you go back and forth from one side to the other, the firing order is the same. The direction is counter-clockwise.
