How to remove emblem adhesive

I'm refreshing the emblems on my 78 F150, I'll clean up the F150 Ranger and repaint the insides.

Question I have for you guys is what do I use to remove the old Lariat adhesive without messing up the paint.

thanks

Kraig

Either as stated above. Or a slightly slower but safer to all paint types, Denatured Alcohol. Just let is soak for a bit and scrub it off with a micro fiber cloth. FYI you'll be chucking that cloth in the trash when your done.

...WD40 also a safe bet. It will take some soaking as its not agressive...but neither will it hurt the paint.

Lighter fluid aka Naptha is about as safe (for paint and finishes) as it gets. Great for removing gummy residues.

Any of the above or 3M adhesive remover (fairly aggressive) or common paint thinner (very safe/mild, similar to Naptha). With the paint thinner, I position or tape a small piece of rag over the spot and then soak it to keep it wet for 10 or 15 minutes so it can work.

I use a razor blade frequently for a glob like that. But you can only use ONE side of the single edge blade. When a blade is sharpened when new ,it leaves a very slight curved edge.If you try to slide the blade along with the curve down it with scrape the paint slightly and you can FEEL it (also see it) doing it.With the curve UP,the blade will skim the adhesive right off. Just start at on side w/the blade; use a little side to side cutting action and if it slips right along you know in about an 1/8" if you have the right side up. Then use a little something mentioned from other post to remove the small amount of remaining residue. (I will use a blade to take virtually ALL adhesive and residue off). gary

I used a heat gun (available at hardware stores) to get the adhesive softened up and used my fingers to roll it off. A little tedious, but it works.

I've used this with good success and no damage to the paint --good for getting tar off the body too.

Right here is the best answer I read so far. I used to get it for removing window tint that was cheap and on for a while.

Goof off makes different "strengths" or product lines.

The MSDS sez one of them contains Acetone, Xylene and.... MEK.

Great stuff, but shouldn't be used anywhere near paint, unless you're trying to remove it.

I prefer Goof Off because it's a household-spec product... the least agressive and enough to get the job done. The 3M adhesive is good too but be mindful of how long it has been sitting on the paint surface.

Being aware of damaging a paint surface should always be a major concern. Most solvents will eventually start "working/softening/discoloring" the paint if left long enough. Some a LOT quicker than others. I easily strip an entire pinstripe from a vehicle with a razor blade as mentioned before with NO paint damage. Any residue left I can quickly remove with a solvent. The particular adhesive in the original post is a 1 minute job.. tops. All suggestions will work fine ;just a matter of finding one you are comfortable with. gary
