I'm having a problem I just cant seem to sort out. I'm having trouble with acceleration. When I step on the gas, the engine bogs down and increases rpms very slowly. I think I do 0 60 in about 30 seconds . If I am going up hill it'll bog down so much that it stalls. I had the timing adjusted to 10 degrees since I did it by ear when I put the new distributor in. I was off 25 degrees... my hearing must be pretty bad . This has been happening since I got her painted. She has been sitting for a few years while I was in college.
Engine info:
360FE
Standard Dizzy with Pertronix 1281 ignition
New Dizzy cap, rotor, plugs and wires.
Recently set timing to 10 degrees btdc
Edelbrock 1406 Carb
Things I have tried/checked
-New fuel filter
-Looks like there is a nice fuel spray in the bowl
-Sucked on the vacuum advance and I wasn't sucking air
-Sweet talked her
I've attached a picture in case theirs anything obviously wrong with the carb set up.
Some things that concern me:
- The back two barrels have a cover (looks like the choke) but they cover doesn't seem to move with the electric choke or when I give it gas. (Maybe its supposed to open with pressure of incoming air though?)
- The electric choke is tuned way off center (counter clockwise from passenger side)o get it to open when its warm (its got those little tick marks)
No cat on the exhaust right? Trying to eliminate certain things.
New fuel filter is a good plan. If it sat for a long time the stale gas may have slimed up the carburetor internal passages.
Another thing you can try, put the timing light away for a while and set initial ignition timing using a vacuum gauge connected to source of manifold vacuum. This works slick for a few different reasons.
Another tell is, possibly, since the problems started after it was painted. How does the spark look at the plugs? Should be bright blue and snappy. Orange is weak. Maybe poor grounds, loose, missing, etc.
Make sure all the ground straps are installed and not loose or trying to connect through thick layers of enamel.
I just went through this with my 360. I am running points though. I am also using an Edelbrock carb. My truck bogged, loaded up, backfired and had now power, just like yours. I tried absolutely everything. The only thing that fixed it was re-curving the distributor. Read below:
I started with a Cardone reman dizzy.
I replaced the heavy spring with one identical to the lighter one, thus, two light springs
I made a limiter for the mech advance so it didn't ping at top end
Hooked vacuum up to manifold vacuum instead of ported
Gave it as much initial timing as it would be comfortable without pinging or starting hard
Enjoyed my increase in power and mileage.
PS.
The flap over the back barrels is likely the secondaries.
Beg or borrow a timing light, vacuum pump, and a vacuum gauge.
It's a vacuum secondary carb.. meaning, the rear barrels open only where there is an engine load to open them. Conversely, a "double pumper" carburetor means all four barrels actuate mechanically regardless of a vacuum signal.
1406 is a MECHANICAL secondary 600cfm with a electric choke. .100 secondary jets and .095 primary jets with a .075x.047 metering rods and 5" vacuum step up springs.
