Hello, my 1987 ford 6.9 IDI Diesel starts up perfectly, but when it gets started it slowly lugs down and dies. After it dies it then takes longer for it to start up the next time. When it gets started i give it some fuel to prevent it from dieing, and then it idles at 1500, which seems really high. It used to idle at around 1000 when it first started. This just recently started to occur, and was wondering if i could get some knowledge on what is needing replaced or adjusted. Thank you.

 

this is happening on a cold engine, rite?
it sounds like air intrusion.
to check if it is, on a cold engine remove the fuel filter before trying to start and see if it is full, or almost empty.

 

not trying to highjack (well ok maybe ) I have exact same, where to check first ????

 

here's what i found on mine, apparantly for some period of time a clamp rubbed against a fuel line going into the fuel filter, it started with a pin hole and progress to a larger opening which was the source of the air intrusion, all is well now running great, BUT the original problem had been happening for a year, is this possible to happen over that period of time and still function ??/
