Tune up questions

I am looking for some tune-up settings for my 94 idi turbo.

7.3IDIT/E40D/F350 RWD

The injector pump, and turbo with upgraded compressor wheel was supplied by Russ aka sandeater1. My transmission was recently rebuilt with a billet converter, and shift kit, and every component that could be upgraded, was. My tach sensor, and FIPL sensor have been replaced. I have installed head studs, and a 3" down pipe, connected to 3" straight pipe exiting behind the passenger rear tire. I adjusted the timing by ear and then took it to a local automotive shop and they said timing was at 10 BTDC, but they have not touched an idi in years and didn't sound confident.

I am running an electric fuel pump off a 6.5 GM and I am showing 5-8 psi at the IP throughout the throttle range, so I don't believe the IP is starving. Man does it start easy!

I adjusted the FIPL before towing my 5th wheel (approx 11,000 lbs) home this weekend, seemed to pull ok, EGT's got as high as 10-1100F, probe is installed between 5 and 7 exhaust ports.

I turned the IP up 2 flats and pulled the trailer back to storage and it seemed to really lug, exhaust temps were higher, and so were water temps. I didn't let it go over 1100, by just letting off the throttle. max speed on the 2nd trip was 55mph under load. I may have knocked the FIPL sensor, and I will check that.

It is running ok, but not what I am hoping for.

I see no black smoke from the exhaust when empty or pulling. not that I want to see black smoke, as Gale Banks says, that's just a waste, but I don't want this thing running too lean either.

What should the timing be set at? How can I tell if I need the IP adjusted up or down? How do I set the waste gate??

Thanks for the help.

can't never run a diesel too lean ..

Lean doesn't hurt a diesel like it do es on gassers ..
You want as much fuel as your air volume and flow can burn ..
Anymore is wasting gas/smoke/heat ..

Sounds like you're on the right track ..
go lean until you lose power and just keep tinkerin' with the timing ..

I donno about setting the wastegate ..
Sounds like a nice motor ..

Tested my FIPL Senssor and it is at 1.1-->4.2 so I'm happy with that. I'm going to turn the fuel back 2 flats, and take the 5th wheel for a cruise down the hiway and see how it goes.

Based on the Banks sidewinder instructions, 1050 is the "Safe max" you want to see on the pyro. No, I don't have a sidewinder, just looking for any data to use as a guideline.

Where should I have my timing at?

Most turbo engines are around 6*. If you don't have black smoke don't bother turning down the fuel.

the EGT temp is why I feel I need to turn the fuel down. Maybe the timing is where I need to look. If I could only find someone around here that has the Ferret tool and doesn't give the deer in the headlights look when you say non-powerstroke 7.3

Timing will help your egts. I simply wouldn't want to turn it down, adjust timing, then turn it back up. If you are being mindful of it, you will be fine with your egt temps.
