Hi all update it is a 2002 explorer EB 4.0L 4X4 this is the one that ran bad no codes but turned out to be bad gas as it sat for almost 2 years so got it started then the starter went replaced that yesterday drove it today driving down the street the truck just stopped moving like the trany went but when to put in park heard the tranny grind had to turn off eng then put in park but the truck still moved like it was in nutral and when restarted made some clanking noises just want to see what it might be before i go ripping things apart thanks in advance
ok well no ideas yet but my next question is if something happen to the transfer case inside would that make the truck stop moving and act like it was the transmission? because i heard some clanking like something broke thanks
Thank you for following up with what you found. I've been reading about a lot of transfer case failures recently. I hope they are not going to be in short supply any time soon.
It took me 2 weeks to track one down that didn't cost $800.00 or more (most were Re-man's) but i found one at a scrap yard and hope it is ok it came out of a 2003 explorer with the correct case number so here's to hoping lol
New update truck did it again was driving and it started to wine drove slow drop child off at school pulling out of parking lot the truck just dropped into 4x4 low all by it's self stopped right there put truck in nutral and pushed the auto 4 wheel and now the truck don't move just like before when the other transfer case cook a dump but no sounds like things broke towed to tranny shop and see where it go's but the 4x4 low light is on and blinking and yesterday the 4x4 high light came on and off by it self and when turning in lot it felt like the 4x4 was kicking in and out and banging any ideas would be great thanks
it came with everything nothing from the old one is there a way to disable the auto 4x4 drive? so when i want to use the 4x4 i just use the buttons not the auto ?
It seems like I read something about that on here before. You might want to search the forum for something like "disable auto 4WD" and see if you find anything conclusive.
Also, make sure all 4 tires are the same size, the tread wear is comparable, and they are properly inflated per the door sticker.
ok update took to tranny shop again but this time it stayed locked in 4w low it seems like the transfer case control moduale wants to keep shifting the transfer case from 2w high to 4w high and low for some reason so after 2 hours of working on it this is what they came up with found the wires for the 2w high to put transfer case in and then got it to go into 2w high or the auto and then pulled the plug on the transfer case so the CM can't shift it again so far so good and will get a CM in the near future. want to thank shorod (Rod) for all his help also going to replace the buttons for the 4w drive just in case
If you find someone with a professional grade scan tool they should be able to monitor the speed sensors in the transfer case to see if one appears to be showing slip, therefore making the request for 4WD.
it was happening on both transfer cases so i think i will try the transfer case module see what happens but now when i start the truck the message center is bright and can see everything but after a few min's it go's dime almost out and can't really see it anymore any ideas on that? thanks
On the message center, that sounds like either an issue with the interior light dimmer circuit (not likely since you don't mention the radio or anything else dimming) or an issue with a bad solder joint for the message center fluorescent display. It's probably a rather simple fix if you're good with a soldering iron. The most difficult part is probably getting the instrument cluster out of the dash.
