I got a 6 cyl in a 1990 Ford F-150 EFI and it starts great, idles great ,and runs great on the hwy. The thing is, at speeds between 30 and 45 it sputters. I can give it more gas when it does this and pulls right out of it. I got new cap rotor wires plugs.
EGR valve is stuck open, EVR solenoid stuck open (opening the egr all the way), fuel filter, air filter, Low fuel pressure,
Lots of things can affect mid range speeds. tell us what you have done to it and the condition of all filters (new, old, missing), How many miles? What RPM range is 30-45MPH in your truck. Is it an automatic or manual trans? Could it be the auto trans hunting for gears? Just guessing now.
Post back with more info and we will try to help you.
Thanks for the reply. I did put in all new filters (air, fuel, pcv). It has 130,000 miles on it but is in good condition. I took it into a transmission shop and he said it's not the tranny but a missing engine (i first thought it was tranny chatter it's an automatic). The rpms are probably pretty low i'm thinking 1500.
Yes, you should notice a little difference if the EGR is the problem, Just make sure you plug the vaccum line that you pull off of the EGR, or you will run into other problems ( high Idle for sure). Unplugging it will give you a CEL and a code, but if it is the problem, check the vacuum line you plugged up. If it has vaccum (a lot) at Idle, You have a bad EVR valve.
Go to Autozone and have them pull the codes for free. Even though the CEL may not be on now does not mean there are no codes. Write down the codes given to you and post them here. We will help diagnose them. Get a Haynes manual, you will need it to run tests for us to figure out whats not working. they are only $12 to $17 bucks at AZ.
