Starter Drive?
My 1995 F-150 will not turn over. I have good batter power, so figure that my starter drive has gone. Earlier the truck seemed to not want to turn over (started turning over slow, then truck started), and after doing this twice over the past week, would not start at all today. It is a standard so I was able to get a tow and pop the clutch.
Question: Does my diagnosis sound correct? If so, can I just change the starter drive or do I need the whole starter new? I know that years back (80s) I could just change the starter drive and I was good to go (other vehicles that weren't Fords).
Any help would be appreciated as I will be fixing it tomorrow.
Thanks all.
Chris
When your saying "will not turn over" are you meaning the starter won't engage the flywheel and crank the motor?
I just purchased a rebuilt starter for my 95 F-150 with the 302.
The starter is of a little bit different design than the original. The parts store said this was due to a problem with the stater not receiving the proper signal due to corrosion or something to that effect and it could result in a "no start" "won't even engage or turn over" situation.
Anyway I had to do a little wiring alteration with a wire splice that came with the starter. It changes this particular wire from a plug on spade connector to a eye type connector for better contact.
This may apply to the 300 I-6 also???
Sorry for the lack of clarity there. Yes, I did mean that the starter will not engage the flywheel and crank the motor. When I turn the key all I get is a (kind of strong - like my batter has a lot of power) clicking sound. I tried boosting it, but with the same results.
I sent my truck south as my buddy (up fishing) lost a ball joint on his Pont--c and, thinking a quick change was possible, we found out that the last guy welded it on (with a full bead around the underside of the ball joint .... unfortunately I could not get underneath the lower arm enough to get at it and we ended up sending for a trailer to haul it back to his mechanic). I just got it back last night and, after asking him, found out that it happened to him once on the way back (why did he not tell me immediately? .... who knows?).
I would still like to know if I can just buy the starter drive, so if anyone else out there can tell me, I would certainly appreciate it.
I will phone around today to find out and also to find a new starter (or starter drive, as the case may be).
Thanks for your input SuperD.
My trouble started when the engine got hot and would not start. It tne progressed to not starting at all.
I had to swap the whole starter for added insurance for little $$$ swap the relay.

I think aprice is on the right track. Check the battery terminals and the cables. I had a car one time that the cable looked good where it connected to the battery terminal, but when I pulled the insulation back a bit I could see the wire was corroded almost half through.
Also you should use a jumper cable or some real thick (6 ga) wire and jump around the starter seleniod to see if that is the problem.
If all that checks okay, pull the starter. Check two or three parts houses for the best price on a rebuilt one and then check a couple of auto electirc shops for a price to rebuild it.

Called the local dealership and "they don't make starter drives anymore, you would have to buy the complete starter." Asking price for that would be $233.00 CD + $110.00 for the core charge.
Call a local parts shop and my $12.95 starter drive will be here in the morning.
Called the dealership back and the parts guy quickly remembered that they in fact do make starter drives, but it is only the dealership that doesn't carry them .... pretty smooth recovery, he must have to practice that alot.
Of course, they do have a portion of their pay based on commission ...... sometimes it helps going in with 0% trust.

I took the starter off this evening to get it set up for the drive swap, and it turns out that my brushes are bad, and have chipped the area where they contact the armature.
I will phone around tomorrow to see if I can get both. I am not sure if the armature is usable as one of the splines has a 1/2" piece that is mangled and I do not feel comfortable using it.
This moves the price up a wee tad, but still alot better than buying a new starter.
I will post the results.
Thanks
Chris
