I know the 300-6 is a decent towing, albeit not fast, rig. But what combination dizzy, carb, intake, exhaust are people running and how well does it work?
A lot of towing is going to come down to your gearing, the length of your truck, and your brakes. (Never forget you have to stop that load too!!)
The longer the trailer is, the more "whip" it's going to apply to your vehicle.
An equally equipped, modded, performing dual cab, extended bed F-series truck is going to have a much easier time pulling a 40' trailer than my Bronco is. A longer wheel base is going to make it much more stable.
Also, a truck with 4.11 gearing will have a much easier time towing than the 2.73 with no granny gear that's smoking clutches.
Don't get carried away. You can put in the year and model and get what Ford said for your vehicle. 150 or less HP, 250 +/- torque, sure it will pull it, but it will pull it s-l-o-w.
I have a 1986 F250 4x4 standard cab granny low 4sp manual. It's hauled over a cord of wet wood in the back nicely. I have some Hellwig helper springs waiting to be installed. I think with a Clifford intake, Edelbrock 500 cfm, EFI exhaust wand Walker pipe it should do okay. I'm planning on a 8ft camper and towing my Champion Bassboat (18.5ft).
