I just got back from my first wheeling trip w/ my new to me Bronco and I discovered that it dies when I get on a steep incline. What can I do to the carb to keep it from doing this? It's on an 85' 300-6 w/ a 4-speed.
I'm no inline six expert to be sure but I've rebuilt countless carbs and it sound as if you need to adjust you float level. How "steep" are we talking about here ?
Sometimes you can get a float for roadracing that will handle inclines better than a standard float, but I doubt that one is available for a 1 barrel carb. Even then you are going to have problems because the fuel level will change relative the various metering passages when you are on an incline. Your best bet is to upgrade to a 4 barrel intake and buy a carb that is meant for 'wheeling.
You're stalling because of lack of fuel. If it were oil related it would knock first and then it wouldn't stall, it would seize. As for a solution to the problem, both suggestions above will help, as far as newer and improved floats. But to really solve the problem, switch to EFI. You don't have to worry about floats any longer. You'll be able to climb a tree and not run out of fuel.
